A good beginner DSLR is either the Nikon D40 or Cannon digital rebel XT. I wouldn't get anything else, unless its a higher model of one of those brands.

Now if you want point and shoot.....there are hundreds of good/inexpensive brands/cameras out there.

Well....they are relatively beginner oriented...but not point and shoot. There are fully automatic modes...which are very easy to use, and there is capability to become more advanced...proffesional advanced.

I prefer the Cannon. I own one. The Nikon is cheaper generally....and I think just as capable...but I already owned a cannon with a few lenses...so it made sense to go with that.
