i have an interesting question for ya'll.my truck,a'91 f-150 has the original factory paint on it.from what i've discovered on the netit was the last year that a certain type of paint and/or clear coat was used on the assembly line.i had the chance to speak with the second owner who told me the first owner was given the chance to have it repainted for free but never did.what i'm wanting to know is how can i take off the clear coat and redo the paint without leaving it scratched up.i've been to several body shops and they all tried to talk me into having it done over, which i can't really afford.any ideas will be very helpful.thanks.

in all honesty the body shops are right.

to remove the clear coat you will only damage the paint. the paint is only a few mills thick. the clear coat makes up the bulk of the paint. that is why new cars/truck look so deep in the paint. all the clear on it.

not much really can take off just the clear and not effect the paint.

if the clear coat is already peeling you'll have an easier time just having the truck repainted.

in the early 90's they had a problem with the clear coat sticking. they found that the type of deorderant that the people were wearing on the production line was falling on the paint and desolving under the clear coat.

then months later after the clear caot had fully hardened it would start to peel.

ford offered to have the trucks repainted after a certain time frame. but they all didn't peel in that time frame.

so some like my 1990 f-150 had good paint for the entire time I had it for 13 years.
